What I expected:
I expected a continuation of the Bingtown/Rain wilds saga, that began with The Liveship, to be exciting and engaging. I have been caught up in the story of Althea, Malta and Seldron Vestrit and their ‘Liveship’ Vivacia. A further ‘Liveship’, Paragon is also prominent in the story and I’m not sure which is the main ship for this tale.
What it was:
Each book in the series has been full to the seams with its tale and this was no exception. There are multiple strands running through the story focused around Ronica Vestrit, Althea Vestrit, Malta Vestrit (though strictly she is a Haven because of her mother’s marriage), Wintrow Haven, Brashen Trell and Reyn Khuprus (Malta’s intended). Oh and did I mention that there is a dragon!
Malta’s adventures with Satrap Cosgo and his faithful companion Kekki ran parallel to Companion Serina and Ronica Vestrit’s circling of each other for control of Bingtown. And would Malta and Reyn ever be able to find each other again, let alone wed?
I felt quite sympathetic towards Tintaglia as she discovered the world she has been born to, despite her seemingly heartless attitude to others. though it would not hurt her any to help out now and again!
The liveships are fascinating and engaging and there is so much at stake for all who get involved with them. There are back stories weaving in and out of each characters interactions. No wonder the book is so large and yet I still didn’t want the tale to end. Well I guess it doesn’t as there is a another follow-on series, which I will most definitely be reading soon.
4/5 Stars (What this means…five-stars-applied-carefully)
The triumphant conclusion to the magnificent Liveship Traders series.
The dragon, Tintaglia, has been released from her wizardwood coffin, only to find that the glories of her kingdom have passed into ancient memory.
Meanwhile, Malta Vestrit navigates the acid flow of the Rain Wild River in a decomposing boat, accompanied by the Satrap Cosgo and his Companion Kekki. Against hope, a ship appears in the alien waters, but does it mean rescue, or a further nightmare, for Malta?
In ruined Bingtown, the citizens are at war, If the city is to survive, Ronica Vestrit must unite all its peoples — both Trader and Tattooed — and liberate the city once and for all.
Althea and Brashen are finally at sea together, sailing the liveship Paragon into pirate waters in a last-ditch effort to rescue the Vestrit family liveship, Vivacia, stolen by the Pirate king, Kennit; but there is mutiny brewing in their rag-tag crew; and in the mind of the mad ship itself…
Majestic and sweeping, Ship of Destiny concludes the tale of the Vestrit family and their part in the history of The Liveship Traders with a soaring and unforgettable finale to this unique series of epic fantasy.
