What I expected:
I expected a land of different kingdoms, with weak rulers pitted against each other. Beings of magic controlling others. The whole of the population at risk of exploitation and lives of drudgery. The only potential saviour a frail being, vulnerable and subject to manipulation.
What it was:
This was the tale of an Elemental, who had been a slave, is now the lover of a king. The elemental has a talent, lost to her at a time when she most needs it. The land is in strife and the Elemental, Nym, is needed to ensure the safety of everything.
Sure, there were points when Nym made mistakes; who hasn’t made monumental fluff ups and lived to regret them! But those around her also make their own fair share of mistakes, no-one is perfect. Hopefully they will work out their differences.
The story is the second in a series, but not having read the first one, I did not feel disadvantaged. The tale was complete in itself and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Nym takes a new power, it’s takes a bit of getting used to. But it is better than nothing and she believes it will help her save Eogan and the land too.
I received an e-ARC of this novel through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. NetGalley does not allow for paid reviews.
“I thrust my hand toward the sky as my voice begs the Elemental inside me to waken and rise. But it’s no use. The curse I’ve spent my entire life abhorring—the thing I trained so hard to control—no longer exists.”
Nym has saved Faelen only to discover that Draewulf stole everything she valued. Now he’s destroyed her Elemental storm-summoning ability as well.
When Nym sneaks off with a host of delegates to Bron, Lord Myles offers her the chance for a new kind of power and the whispered hope that it may do more than simply defeat the monster she loathes. But the secrets the Bron people have kept concealed, along with the horrors Draewulf has developed, may require more than simply harnessing a darker ability.
They may require who she is.
Set against the stark metallic backdrop of the Bron kingdom, Nym is faced with the chance to change the future.
Or was that Draewulf’s plan for her all along?
