Origins and meanings of words – March 2011

Some weird words have been cropping up lately and most of them I’ve forgotten! But of those that I can remember, here’s the pick of the crop…

Tumescent – swollen or becoming swollen [from Latin tumescere to begin to swell, from tumēre].
This word is part of another blog that I wrote recently and I felt that others might want to know what it actually meant.

Heal – derived from Old English Haelan – to make whole

Valedictory – farewell address, from the Latin valediction (vale = farewell; diction = to say)
